The Door

An adaptation of the popular 1987 Hungarian novel by Magda Szabó, and directed by Oscar-winning Hungarian filmmaker, István Szabó of Mephisto (1981), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Set in Hungary in the 1960s, the film stars Helen Mirren as a maid and German actress Martina Gedeck (The Lives of Others) as a well-to-do novelist who form an unlikely bond. It is premiering at the European Film Market (EFM) 2012 in Berlin, before opening in Hungary March 8. The cast also includes Martina Gedeck, Károly Eperjes, Gábor Koncz, Enikö Börcsök, Mari Nagy, Ági Szirtes and Péter Andorai.

Set in 1960s Budapest, the story focuses on the relationship between two women—a writer, Magda (Gedeck) and her housekeeper, Emerenc (Mirren). As their lives become more intertwined and something resembling a friendship blossoms, so too does Magda’s interest in Emerenc and her erratic ways.
